A credit history free of debt is what people should strive to achieve. With bad debts showing on your credit report, it puts you with a chance of being declined the next time you apply for credit. Most of us know of at least one time in our lives, that feeling of embarrassment of being knocked back.
When your starting out it's a good idea to build up a good credit history by applying for credit cards and using them sensibly, as this will help your credit rating. If only to use them and pay off the balance owning within the specified interest free period.

is maintained by making your payments on time, good money management and not applying for more credit than you can comfortably afford to pay back. Also making to many applications for credit in a short space of time will have a detrimental effect.
Falling behind on payments and getting into arrears, will show up on your credit history. Once you have any defaults, ccj's or bankruptcy orders showing, it's going to be many years from the date they're issued before they're removed from you credit file.
It's a good idea to take a look at your credit history and see where it currently stands, especially before making an application for any further credit. You can obtain credit reports online showing your current state of affairs and any bad debts that need to be dealt with.
