Credit report repair - What you can do
Credit report repair is possible and you can dispute and remove inaccurate and incomplete information from your credit report. The law states that you can ask for a reinvestigation of the files in your credit report that you consider inaccurate or not complete. The best part is you will not be charged for a reinvestigation. You can repair your credit report on your own without the help of any credit repair agency.
The Fair Credit Reporting Act has laid down the following rules:
- If in the last 60 days you have been refused credit, employment or insurance, you can get a free copy of your credit report from your credit bureau. The company that refuses credit, employment or insurance is bound to supply information of the credit bureau's name, address and contact number.
- You are entitled to dispute mistakes in your credit report for free. All you need to do is fill up a dispute form and submit it. You should also provide documents that support your claims. It is advised to provide photocopies of original documents.
- Upon the finding of errors during reinvestigation, you are entitled to ask the credit bureau to send your revised credit report to persons who received your credit report during the past six months. Persons who have applied for jobs can ask the credit bureau to send the revised credit report to people who received the credit report for employment purposes during the past two years.
- Upon completion of reinvestigation the credit bureau is bound by rules to provide you with a free credit report.
These are some of the points that should be kept in mind when you want to repair your credit report.
